Committees and Auxiliaries
There are many ways to get involved at Stephen Wise. Committees work in collaborative and dedicated effort with our clergy and professional staff on synagogue and community activities:
Adult Education: Center for Community Learning
Plans educational programming for adults and works with the Library Committee to acquire scholarly books and other media for our collection.
Cemetery
Oversees the management and long-term development of the SWFS community mausoleum and cemetery at Westchester Hills Cemetery, Hastings on Hudson, NY.
ECC (Early Childhood Center)
Serves as a liaison to the Board of Trustees, working with the ECC director to determine policies and support for the Center.
Fundraising
Works on development to raise funds in support of the synagogue’s mission and activities.
House
Preserves and enhances the physical environment of the synagogue.
Israel
Initiates and develops programs to support and strengthen our connection to the modern State of Israel, including congregational trips led by our Rabbi.
Library & Archives
Oversees our Rabbi Edward E. Klein Memorial Library as an exceptional resource for the congregation and the broader community; sponsors book–related events, and engages volunteers.
Membership
Enhances the membership experience and promotes synagogue life to the unaffiliated.
Communications
Promotes our Services, programs and events to members and the broader community, via Bulletin, e-mail, the Jewish and secular press, flyers, special publications and mailings, and website.
Religious School
In conjunction with the director of Jewish learning, oversees policies and activities of the religious school.
Ritual
Works with clergy on the religious and ritual needs of the congregation, with special attention to balancing new ideas and tradition.
Social Justice: Caring Community
Provides support to congregants in times of need and of celebration, such as bikhur cholim, visiting the sick, shivah minyanim, sitting shivah with a quorum, as well as acknowledgement of simchas, happy occasions.
Social Action
Considers topics for congregational advocacy and action. Closely linked with the Social Services Committee, it addresses poverty, hunger, homelessness, literacy, and social justice issues.
Social Services
Oversees all social service programs, including our Homeless Shelter, Literacy Initiative, weekly Emergency Food Program, Young Adventurers group for challenged adults, annual Mitzvah Day, and annual food, clothing, blood, book, and toy drives.
Ad Hoc Committees
Appointed by the President, with approval of and reporting to the Board of Trustees, committees may be established for special projects and tasks to further the goals and mission of the synagogue.
Auxiliaries
Women’s Organization
Affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism Women of Reform Judaism, provides a forum
for women to meet, talk, learn, and connect.
Stephen Wise Free Synagogue Temple Youth (SWFSTY)
Affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY).
