SWFS Yom Kippur Food Drive

Over the past decade, on Yom Kippur, nearly 30 tons of food has been collected by Stephen Wise Free Synagogue and was immediately distributed to the hungry in our community. We join hundreds of congregations across the country and invite you to participate in this important project.

On Yom Kippur we fast as part of the traditional penitential process; but we cannot forget those who fast through no choice of their own. We take seriously the prophet Isaiah’s charge to relieve suffering in the world, "Is not this the fast I look for: to unlock the shackles of injustice, to undo the fetters of bondage, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every cruel chain? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house?" Isaiah 58:6–8

In this spirit we ask you to take an empty shopping bag and return it to the synagogue on Yom Kippur day, filled with non–perishable food items. CITY HARVEST will distribute the food to those in need.

The following items are recommended:
  • infant formula & baby food
  • powdered milk & fruit juices
  • canned tuna, beef hash, & stew
  • pasta, rice, beans, & cereal
  • canned fruits & vegetables
  • jello mix
  • tea & coffee

(No glass with the exception of baby food jars)
Mindful of security, we ask that you bring bags of food on Yom Kippur day only.
