Nothing But Nets

The Working Group on Social Justice, ECC and Religious School recently launched an exciting congregation-wide initiative - Nothing But Nets, which is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. Malaria is preventable but infects nearly 500 million people each year and kills more than one million people.

  • Every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria and those that survive are faced with physical and mental impairments, such as poor growth and development.
  • Malaria keeps countries poor; in addition to the burden on the health system, it costs Africa $12 billion a year in lost productivity.

Our mitzvah will be to save a life by making a $10 donation (or more) to buy an insecticide-treated family bed net. The net stops mosquitoes from biting during the night and spreading the disease, and the insecticide on the net kills the mosquitoes when they land on it, stopping them from flying on to find their next victim.

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) is urging its members to contribute 50,000 nets. To help in this effort, SWFS has set a goal of 700 nets (one per family). As an added incentive, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches each donation, net for net! For each net we donate, two nets will be sent to Africa. Click here to see photos from the URJ's recent trip to Kenya.

With everyone in SWFS’s help, we can do our part to stop this deadly disease. Buying a net is the true definition of a mitzvah - tikkun olam!

If you would prefer to write a check, please make it payable to Union for Reform Judaism and in the memo line, write Nothing But Nets.

Your check should be mailed to:
