Arts
Every
classroom offers the children the chance to use a wide variety of art
materials to experiment, to explore ideas and express themselves creatively.
An Art and Science Studio is also available
to all classrooms so that children can delve into an area of the curriculum
in small groups with a rich assortment of art supplies. An art specialist
or classroom teacher may facilitate this work in this extraordinary space.
Movement
Each class of our 3, 4 and 5 year olds meets with our movement
specialist every other week in small groups. Because children experience
so much of the world through their bodies, movement is a tool that is
used for learning, problem solving and creative expression. All areas
of learning, physical, social, emotional and cognitive, are integrated
into movement classes.
Music
Although music occurs in every classroom on a daily basis,
each class of children meets with our music specialist once a week. Learning
concepts are approached through music, often utilizing movement activities
as well. Jewish holidays as well as curriculum themes are also explored
through this medium.
Gardening
Our
rooftop playgroup and terrace give the children the opportunity to have
hands on gardening experiences. Our environmental educator works with
teachers and children through the entire gardening process from deciding
what seeds to plant to harvesting the fruits of their labor. The children
learn where food really comes from, and they delight in the process as
well as the end product.
Jewish holiday themes are also interwoven into our
gardening experiences.
Science
Science is fully integrated into the curriculum. Children
observe how properties change through cooking activities, sand and water
play and through explorations of the natural environment. In addition,
the children have the opportunity to garden in our outdoor spaces and
may care for a class pet.
Jewish Studies
Our curriculum has a strong Jewish component.
The Early Childhood Center is proud to work in partnership with the Jewish Early Childhood Education Initiative (JECEI). JECEI is an organization that seeks to engage young children and their families into a rich and meaningful Jewish life. It has worked with schools across the country, to infuse early childhood centers with Jewish values, utilizing the Reggio Emilia approach to education as its vehicle. Shabbat is observed every Friday, with traditional blessings over grape juice, candles
and challah. At Shabbat and holidays, children learn blessings, Hebrew
songs and holiday rituals. Parent involvement is not only welcomed
but is also a part of the curriculum. Each Friday a different family
celebrates Shabbat with the children, and there are classroom activities
that include the parents for every major Jewish holiday.
The synagogue offers a Tot Shabbat once a month with a short service in the
Sanctuary and an art, music or drama activity immediately following.
