With loving care and earnest devotion, we have created a memorial park that its peace and beauty may bring consolation and balm to grief-stricken hearts.
To select the spot to be consecrated as the final earthly resting place, and avoid unfair burden on others when their hearts are most heavy, please visit the cemetery and confer with the Director, Michael Scarpelli.
In keeping with the Free Synagogue spirit of service to community, strict avoidance of commercialization of the Cemetery has been maintained.
History:
Our cemetery site was established in the 19th Century as the non-sectarian Mount Hope Cemetery. Our congregation, then called the Free Synagogue, purchased the northern end of the site in 1919 and established the Westchester Hills Cemetery of the Free Synagogue.
Description:
The Cemetery accommodates approximately 1,500 plots and numerous individual and family mausoleum as well as a Community Mausoleum designed for 138 crypts.
Notable individuals and families interred at Westchester Hills include Barricini, Guggenheim, Tisch, Millstein, Lee Strasburg, John Garfield, Judy Holiday, David Susskind, George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, Billy Rose and Rabbi Stephen S. Wise.
