For over 100 years, Stephen Wise Free Synagogue has been at the forefront of the struggle to help make the world a better place.
We believe that religious values like justice, compassion, and kindness must be brought into public discourse to inspire moral and ethical action in broader society.
Our founder, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, (1874-1949), cofounded the NAACP in 1914 and the American Jewish Congress in 1920, and served as a member of President Roosevelt’s Advisory Commission on Political Refugees from 1938 to 1945. We were among the first synagogues to house and operate a shelter for the homeless, and we were the first synagogue in the United States to appoint a female rabbi.
Please help us realize the Jewish ideal of tikkun olam (repairing the world).
